    Default Scoliosis does caue pain

I am going to get that made into a bumper sticker or maybe a tatoo.
I have been fighting for the last year to get some help with pain in my torso due to the scoliosis. This past month I have been working with a physical therapist who is actually helping.
Scoliosis is not just a condition that requires a brace or fusion as a teen. It has life long effects, that sadly I'm learning get worse as we age.
Many older people get scolios as their bodies start to be effected by other orthopedic problems. People who have things like spinal cord injury often find that they start to develop scolosis at their injury level just due to the loss of muscle strength.
Anyway just wanted to make a first post for this topic.

    Default calcim

I agree about the age thing MrsD. That and stenosis and not getting enough calcium has started causing me pain day and night. I was hoping you would pop in. I wanted to ask you the best way to remedy my problem. Back years ago, after I stopped my geeze can't recall but pills an obgyn would have a woman on before menopause, know it is not prevacid, that helped get my idiopathic peripheral neuropathy a big boost in my opinion anyway.

I was having pain in my back and my regular doctor wisely sent me for a bone scan. He said that I had crackle like things in my bones and that two Tums a day was the cheapest way to get calcium. Yep and guess who did not follow up very well and now is in big trobule I believe from this.

I just haven't been able to get the appointment from regular doctor and was thinking it might pay me to visit a rheumatologist I haven't seen in many years. If this is the reason what would be the best I could take or should I just start in with the SlowMag or OsCal with calcium +D3 which I already bought. Any suggestions?

A friend at church just a bit older than myself is on a good med her doctor prescribed for her. I can't recall the name of it. She said she had a bad fall and was bruised etc and that without whatever that med was - felt like she would have broken some bones without it. I don't car, over the counter or doc prescribed, I just need relief.

I realise I should have put this on a seperate post but I have not had the best of luck with getting my replies down since I am not thinking straight from pain in back and ribs. Hope you are having great weather on vacation.

Joy, I think you may have me mixed up with someone else since I don't know anything about supliments except to take whatever handful the doc says.
I wish I had some helpful info I do know that my husband was given Fosomax I think it is after he snapped his femer in half becasue they found his bones were thin. I think a rhemumatologist is a good idea because TUMS doesn't seem like enough if you already have brittle bones. There are several pills on the market to strengthen bones but it seems like some of have come under recent problems with being linked to side effects. Sorry I'm not more helpful

Hello Joy and Karen. Joy, were you thinking Mrs. Doubtfire(?) or something like that? I think she has a blog or something. I'm surprised not to see her here now and again. I'm sorry about all the pain you have. ((((Joy))))

Karen, I'm glad you posted here. Yes indeed Scoliosis causes pain. It was in my later years before a Dr. Dx-ed me with it. My shoulder bends in and the pain is awful. If I'm walking and Ken is behind me he will gently try to get that shoulder back and that helps me get straight enough to stand normal which helps me with the osteoporosis (?) they both hurt. Of course I have to stop walking, but it does give a little relief. I notice the worse it gets he does not have much sucess in getting where I can walk without being bent!!

I have an ex-SIL that had Scoliosis from birth. She went thru the rod and surgery to remove and she just kept getting worse. the last time I saw her she was very bent. It hurt me for her.

Drs. need to do more research and help their patient's with something to relieve that pain. My normal pain med. will not even touch it. Sometimes a muscle relaxer will help me go to sleep. Sometimes!!

Take care dear, Jo aka Julia

PS: How is MQ? I think of you both often! ((((Karen))))

Julia who know just who I was thinking of. I have a good excuse now at least, I am not getting enough oxygen so that explains a lot, LOL. I probably did get the mrss mixed up. But it wasn't what my friend took anyway. I often wonder if my scoliosis or other back problems is what is causing my feet and legs to be numb, no feeling. Doctors at first said no when I questioned them so I finally just quit wondering. But since my hands are almost dead now as well I guess it is truly that idiopathic peripheral neuropathy.

We all have something so no need for me to complain. I have several dear friends who are dealing with cancer now. I just hope to try and deal best I can cause I sure can tell my hubby is not feeling as sprite as e use to either. Getting older sure isn't as much fun as it use to be back when we were young teenagers now is it!

Joy, I guess I didn't listen close enough when I was young. I had this idea that the "Golden Years" was heaven on earth.

WEll, I'm sure heaven is nothing like what we are going thru now. It helps sometimes when we write about what health problems we have.

Sometimes it is other stuff we need to talk about. I have never heard you complain. I hear you are having some whopping big health problems and I'm glad you have shared. I feel like I am talking to my next door neighbor when I "talk" with you on BT.

Like Daily Joy, will you loan me a cup of sugar? Now DJ will gladly send me that cup of sugar on this special line we have between our houses. Its good to have great neighbors, eh?

Karen dear, I hope things are getting better for you. How is Mr.Q? Your MIL, such a sad situation. I've been that route and I can't tell you anything you don't already know, but I still think of you having to take care of all of this with your own health problems.

those Drs. that tell you Scoliosis isn't painful may one day find themselves bending and hurting like heck. Do you think they will think of all those patients that they mis-lead? I doubt it. I think of you often and hope you are able to cut back on some of the walking you have had to do.

all my love to ((((((Joy and Karen both)))))) Julia

Karen, my Pain M.Dr. told me Monday that the Scoliosis is worse and he was wondering if I had fractured a bone caused by the Scoliosis being worse. Now there is another reason Scoliosis can be painful. I don't know the out come from the exrays they took, but he had the nurse bring me my scripts. He changed my break thru pain med. and increased the dosage.

Can't say it has helped at all. I simply do not believe the meds. he is giving me are the best ones for the Osteoporosis as well as the Scoliosis. I'm no Dr. , but sometimes I think we know more what our body needs than they do.

Oh well, it all is just going to get worse. I'll keep gritting my teeth to keep from screaming with pain. lol

I hope you are doing well. I know you aren't well and I feel for you. How is Mr. Q & your MIL? There again, I hope things are the best they can be considering their condiction.

    my love, Jo ((((Karen))))

You too Daily Joy!! I hope you are having some better days now and again. Life can get hard some days. You take care too. My love, Julia ((((DJ))))

julia i love you to pieces, pati too and the whole bunch on emotional forum. well i just did do a boat load of complaining, LOL. thought best to just go ahead and do it. i was getting so cranky with hubby it is still a wonder i haven't took his head top off yet, LOL. he is a slow learner. i am usually so mild mannered, nothing much ruffles me etc, so when i do start getting a tad huffy, he should know after all these years i am feeling much worse and to watch out. but no, he is gonna be a dummy all his life i am beginning to suspect :ambivalence:

Daily Joy, didn't you know you had to empty that boat-load every now and again? Well, in case you didn't I'm here to tell you now!!
You know DJ, most husbands are like that. You can hit them on the head with a brick and they go " did a pecan fall on my head?" lol I say pecan cause our trees are loaded this year and the kids are too lazy to come pick them up. I take my walker out there, put the seat down and use the NEW pooper scooper and pick up about 10 at a time. Now, am I smart or what??

I do hope you are feeling some better. It's going to take awhile to get you well, girl. If you need to go to Dr. don't wait for appointment, just GO!! If that don't work go to ER and have them page him.

just take care and get to feeling better.

    all my love, Julia
