Default Romaine lettuce off the menu (US FDA announcement)

Seems any and all romaine lettuce isn't safe to eat just now, according to the US Center for Disease Control's recent announcement:

Thank you for posting this warning. We have a container of mixed greens and one with Artisan lettuce. I'd better check those for romaine.

I remember that years ago spinach was recalled.

How does e coli get on our veggies, I wonder?

The tiny crevices in lettuce and other greens make them very hard to clean, apparently--though I don't know why this has been a problem in recent years but we never heard about it for many decades before then. Maybe it existed but hadn't been figured out yet?

I guess we should learn to love wilted lettuce salad....
