That bird seed must be great stuff. When I lived in an apartment with a balcony, I had a couple of windowboxes with plants in them hooked onto the balcony railing. I wondered how all the odd little weeds that kept sprouting up in those boxes got there. There was a regular little forest of them growing there.

Then I realized that the woman upstairs, who had a similar balcony, liked to feed the birds, and she came out on her balcony and scattered birdseed with a liberal hand, and some of it must have landed in my windowboxes.

We saw quail all the time when I was a kid. You would be walking in the foot tall grass, and one would take off flying, and scare the you know what out of you! They wait until you are almost on top of them to fly.

Known as bobwhites too--? I think I asked this once before.

I never heard them called quail until I was an adult, but those birds that kept saying "bob-bob-bob-white" must have been all over the place. Just to put in a plug for myself here, I used to be able to imitate their call.

The families of quail are sure growing. This group of 16 kids with mom & dad were observed at the fountain today getting a drink. There are at least 3 other families we've seen with much younger kids, but I think this is the largest family.

Wow, that's impressive! They must have been eating and eating. And 16 of them!

I'm pretty sure this group is the same group I posted a picture of in the June chit chat thread (post #160 ). All 16 of them weren't shown in the pic because some of them were on the ground behind the wall with mom. They have really grown a in a month, but they are not the tiny guys I posted a pic of just last week. That group of youngsters are much smaller and there aren't as many in the family (I think it's called a covey). I don't know why they don't just wear ID badges or something so I can keep track of who's who easier!!!

    I'm glad I'm not a quail . . . 16 kids all at once . . . makes me tired just thinking of twins!
