Default colloid cyst imaging, blood test diagnosis

what are procedures to diagnose a colloid cyst? can ct scans or mri miss a colloid cyst? is there blood work or other tests that can give a clue that you have a cyst or tumor somewhere in the body

Hi and welcome to the forum. I from personal experience can confirm that they can miss a Colloid Cyst on CT scans. I was taken to hospital as had become unresponsive, and CT scans confirmed I had hydrocephalus, but they couldn't see why for a while and had to do more scans and eventually found that I had the cyst, which was big at 17mm but they said it was the same colour as surrounding tissue so didn't stand out. But after several different types of MRI scans it became more obvious.

Do you think you have a colloid cyst then? And have you had scans done?

    All the best, Will

Just looked at my medical records, I had scans on 1st and 2nd Nov, but it wasn't until further scans on 4th Nov that they found the cyst.

i had a ct scan a few days ago they said it was normal, i had two or three ct scans starting in 1999. i started having symptoms in 1997. i was sitting in class one day and i felt this stabbing pain in my left eye, i couldn't keep my eyes open because of the pain. i had to close my eyes for about 30minutes, during this time i also severe headaches and left eye pain at night, felt like my left eye was bulging out, and when i push on it, there was a squishy sound. there is also little dots at the end of the blood vessels in my left eye, looks like a little bleeding, not very noticeable, since 1997 i I've had this dull headache on the left side, also numbness on the left scalp, then every two weeks or so i would get severe headaches on the left side, the back of the head on the left side, stabbing pain in the back left eye, fullness and outward pressure in the left ear, headache on the top left of the head, and sometimes rarely a stinging liquid discharge not sure from which eye. some loss of balance and maybe some memory issues. the physician assistant also said no hydrocephalus from the recent ct scan. was ct or mri the first to find your cyst? can a general mri miss a colloid cyst too? what type of mris are used to find the cyst? do i need a neurologist that specializes in colloid cysts or any neurologist would do? i have an appointment with headache specialist, you think this person can help? i also have an appointment another neurologist for may 9 2016 just in case? should i be prepared with specific mri requests or would they know?

Hi, sorry to hear of your problems. I'm not an expert but can share my experiences if that helps. I'll attach one of my MRI scans which shows my cyst best before it was removed, and at the bottom right it details the type of scan it was. From what I understand, a radiologist looks at your scans and details everything they see, so they wouldn't just be looking for a colloid cyst but they would be looking at everything. And they are usually pretty good at it. The reason they missed my cyst was as it blended in with the surroundings, but once they knew it was there and then looked back at the original scan, they were able to see it. So it was most obvious on MRI but it was there on the CT scan, just difficult to see.

Where did you first get the idea about a colloid cyst? Is it from reading stuff on the internet? Not to sound patronising but it is really easy to freak yourself out from reading on the internet. After my cyst was removed, I was convinced I was having vertigo and went back to see my neurosurgeon. I was due a 6 month MRI as part of my follow up but this was brought forward, but it showed nothing and as soon as I was told I was ok, my vertigo disappeared.

The fact you don't have hydrocephalus is a good sign, and they would see it if you had it. But you can probably have a colloid cyst without hydrocephalus as I believe you only get it when the cyst gets big enough to start blocking the csf flow.

I didn't get any of the commonly described symptoms with mine and didn't get headaches until probably a few days before I went to hospital.

It would probably be worth having a doctor or optrician look into your eyes, as they can see if you have papilledema, which is caused by intracranial pressure, but if your recent scan showed no hydrocephalus then this is probably unlikely anyway as I believe it is caused by this. And it may be worth having your eyes tested anyway if you've not had them done recently, as you symptoms could be caused by an eye condition rather than neurological condition.

Best of luck with it all anyway and try not to worry too much, and try trust the experts!

Trying to work out how to attach an image!

    Cheers

    Will
