buying external hard drive...what kind/brand would you suggest?

I'm going to get an external hard drive soon. Is there a particular brand/type that you guys would suggest??? I need to keep my budget between $50 and $80 dollars and I need to keep full HD video footage and things like that on the hard drive. I'll be using the drive to back up important files in case my laptop ever dies on me again.

Side question, how much space is 500GB compared to the space on a typical laptop? I am trying to figure out how much space I will need on the external hard drive.

Depending on the age of the laptop. My guess is that 500GB is what you probably have in the laptop. I have used 3 different types of hard drives over the years. Western Digital (way back in the day they were the absolute best), Seagate (meh have had more problems with them than any other), and Samsung. Keep in mind these are all "internal" hard drives but the only difference is that the "external" hard drives have a casing.

Normally I would recommend Samsung, but they're a bit more expensive. I found a WD (Western Digital) drive that comes in different colored cases Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register...

I'm also assuming your laptop is USB 2.0 compatible (to connect the drive), if it's 5 or 6 years old or newer it should be
Question: Why can't I post links or pictures?
Question: Why can't I have a signature, avatar, or profile picture?
Question: What's wrong with my account?

Answer: You are in the "registered users" user group. This group is very limited in what it can do. This will annoy spammers to no end Just keep posting once you have been registered for 30 days and have made 11 posts your account will be "unlocked".

It's really easy to put someone on ignore and it's strongly recommended that you do so with people who's posts you don't like.

    Step 1 - log in
Step 2 - click on the "settings" link
Step 3 - click on the "edit ignore list" link on the left side of the screen
Step 4 - type (or paste if you copied and pasted it) the username of the person you want to ignore
Step 5 - click the "ok" button on the right of the screen

Easy peasy and will lower your blood pressure. One important note though, this won't hide quoted posts. It's an oversight on the developers part and it's not an easy thing to "fix." So if someone quotes someone you have ignored, you'll see the quote.

Alternatively when you click on a person's name and view their profile page, underneath their avatar, there is a option that says, "Ignore this person". Click that link and then click the yes button.

It works perfectly!! Now a place that does data retrieval(data retrieval takes about 5 days apparently) is going to put all the files from my old dead computer on to my new external hard drive. I had a question, when I move the files from the drive to my new computer by dragging and dropping them do the files stay on the drive too??

Please let me know. I was curious because when I drag and drop the files from my computer to the hard drive it basically makes a copy of the file, and one is on the drive and one is on the computer. So I wondered if the same happened when you dragged files out of the drive.

It depends on if they left clicked or right clicked the file while dragging. Left click typically moves the files (taking it from one place and putting it into another), while right click usually gives options to copy the file/folder.

Thanks so much!!! The data retrieval worked like a charm!! I have everything back! Unfortunately I also have junk that someone had saved on my old computer in my external hard drive now that I do not need or want. How do I delete that stuff off my external hard drive and my computer?? When I right click sometimes a menu comes up and one of the options is "move to trash" Should I move it to my computer's trash and see if that removes it from my hard drive?? When I drag stuff out of the drive my computer does indeed make copies of everything so I need to get the junk off both my computer and hard drive. My computer doesn't seem to have an option to move the files off the drive permanently without coping it and saving it other than that.

Yes if you "move to trash" it will delete it off of the external drive. Then when you empty the trash on the computer it's gone from the computer
