    Thoughts on Physical Therapy

I made this exact same post here on braintalk in the Cerebral Palsy forum a few years ago. It's about my thoughts on physical therapy. When I found the writing again recently I posted it on my account on an art website I go on. I thought I'd post the link here on the forum again since this writing was originally posted here.

Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register... You can comment here or on the art site if you want to. I know it is not the best writing in the world but it they are my honest feelings and I feel it is important. I advertised braintalk in the little description below the writing. :)

Hi, drat! The link doesn't work for me. Is there another way in I could use like maybe the title of the page? Sorry I couldn't access it!

Got it! Yes, Nick is the same as you. His spasticity is 100% tied to his emotions. Even with the baclofen pump, morphine, lorazepam, you name it, he's on tons of relaxants and strong pain killers, he STILL goes berserk physically when he gets excited about something. I remember a few years ago, watching the Oscars on TV, there was a documentary film about a man who has CP and paints - he's a great artist. Anyway, the film won and when it was announced, this guy literally jumped out of his chair and fell on the floor, he was screaming with excitement and absolute delight. Everyone around him was pretty horrified, but the filmmakers were laughing and high fiving him. It was great. Did you see that by any chance? PS: we've had some great PTs and some lousy ones too.

I am biased-I have had lots of PTs really be there for me in my life! But I truly LOVE PTs!!! I think they are an awesome group of people and have respect for the profession!! During childhood I was in rehab five times, each time was three to five weeks. During that I met lots of pts/ots and they were all the best people ever!!! Loved them! In hospital, I always bonded with therapists way more then nurses or docs. Docs, in n out, not their fault-nature of their jobs. Nurses, some where okay, some where annoying (as in stop bothering me) Best memories were of my therapists!! After I was discharged I started at an out-patient place, for adults. Again all those PTs were great with me even though they were not used to peds. I liked going there. Switched to a different outpatient place, again for adults, again they where great!

I had one school PT that just plain sucked! But that was one out of thirty!! And I feel that school district, the one in my home town, sucked. With the exception of they got me a computer in the late 1980's when it wasn't standard and they provided lots of therapy. But most of the teachers sucked, most of the aides sucked, the curriculum was a joke. So that one could have not even been an actual PT, they could have been a pta or who knows. As a 4th grader I didn't know enough to ask what school did you graduate from, do you have a bs or a ms in pt? They only worked for the district one year-who knows.. My next school PT had the guy for like four years! He truly was very caring and a good person. BUT some of the advice he gave my folks and I-I now feel was crappy.

Did the therapy help me and how much? I do not know, honestly I think about it and I don't know. Given that 90% of it I'd do again. I think I'd be even more angry if therapies weren't done aggressively in childhood to try to lessen the effects of my disability.. And I think some of that anger would be towards my parents for not researching more. Which would not be healthy in our lives. Now my anger is just towards big pharma, the FDA, the presence of profit in healthcare, schools and fate itself-my parents did everything humanly possible to help me! There's no reason why this happened to my parents and I. It just did-that's hard.

I think with kids you need to try everything you can!! Even though nothing is guaranteed to work.. I am a huge advocate for early intervention and if I were queen funding for such would be way increased!!! You need to try!!!!!!

As an adult, I just do not think PT would help, been there, done that...Last year m Dr. asked do I want to try PT again, I said I don't see much point. Even after mom and I both agreed that sometimes when they have nothing to help a patient they refer em to PT/OT/speech. That was what was going on. I wasn't a candidate for DBS, therefore just refer to therapy-no thanks. But every adult needs to make their own decisions about what is BS and what could help1

So my thoughts are PTs rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please note that I was NOT trying to bash PTs. I have had some really great ones! I just think some of the methods they use can be improved upon. I HATED all my school PTs but whenever I had private PT it was great. I tended to like the male PTs more. We just had a better bond somehow. I think stuff CAN be done for adults now because I have seen improvements in my body and seen stories like the Gregg Mozgala story.
