    another Beta

well I went by the fish last night at WalMart and there was a blue crown type male. His container was getting awful low of water and it was so messy. So I bought him.. So far so good I moved him to a much larger space and at first he refused to move but was doing better after I put some foliage in so he could hide if he wanted to.

If I post about it I can keep up with how long I have had one, (grin) I do remember buying the last one in June and he had a long trip home because it was while we were out of town, LOL.

Well good for you Joy. I think they are beautiful and have always considered getting one but they look so sad all alone and some of those new miniature containers they keep them in make me claustrophobic and it just seems cruel. Like you I would definitely have to upgrade the poor things.

When I worked at the pet store the manager helped me set up my own 20 gallon tank and I absolutely loved watching them. Lots of work though. Well not lots lol but some days it is all I can do to shower so having yet something else to clean just makes me depressed.

Yep I know the feeling. I do have some advice tho since you are younger than I am. I had a lot of pain issues after age 28, then developed fibromyalgia back when they were just coining a name for it. Went on to the rest. So whenever you do feel like doing something, really go for it Chris. Especially since you have a child that is still young. I save up my energy myself for the 7 & and 12 year old grands. I have to rest after showering myself.

I want a cat so bad and still miss my dog of course so I was hoping that having to change the water for the fishes would keep me reminded not to get any more pets. Guess I will stop going by and looking at them because it seems that there always is several if not many that the water is low and dirty dirty dirty. Poor fish. I am hoping that I can sit the two containers on the same table. Not knowing how good eyesight the male Betas have tho, I will have to keep watch at first to see if it distresses them.

I once left one of my Betas with a neighbor when we were gone for awhile. Later her son told about putting a mirror into the container just to see the fish try and fight itself. I kinda did not like that and never asked them for help again.

How big of a tank should they have?

In stores they are often kept in cup sized containers. This is somewhat cruel as they can not straighten out their bodies to swim Your container should be at least four times the length of the fish. Make sure your tank has a lid as they can jump. Never buy a fish from a store where they cannot straighten out their body, you are supporting the sellers for keeping them cheaply. Gallon sized tanks are good, or larger is better.

i did join beta fish and care etc place shortly after buying this new fish. I wil check out your link as well. so far tho, I am doing just about the only way I can with what I can afford to invest. I know the reddish one has lived longer than he would have and I suspect the blue one too. he is still skiddish tho when i get near the tank. both have hiding places.

wow I am changing the water often enough. Thanks. I cannot stand the smelly water. I did join a betta place after buying the last one. I said I did not want to waste time if I need to ask questions in a hurry. so far so good.

stupid question: how do they mate?

mine was given to me one year for Christmas. came with a darling black ceramic cat holding the bowl. of course when the cat's decided to go for the fish they broke the entire bowl/cat stand. I never found the fish either.

I just saw where an old guerilla at a zoo was given a bunny for a companion. that was rather neat. we need more stories like that to help lift the winter drearies.

and at the store today a guy had a pit bull mix in his grocery cart. I spoke to the guy but ignored the dog. must have been a service dog but didn't have any kind of doggie vest on.

              GO PETS-whatever type!

I lost my long version so will have to make it shorter this time. I know that it is difficult for the ordinary person to know just when to even try and let them mate. There was something said about the male making a bubble. One of mine has done that, one big bubble and lots of smaller ones. I think the smaller ones mean bad luck tho.

So I won't be trying that and have no intentions of buying a female as I have sorta said no more looking, LOL. I am running out of room to place them and biggest of all reasons they do require attention which I am often short of

Why Joy I hope you ain't hangin' at the store tryin' to rescue them there Bettas. You'll have to move outside lol. Yes I had read that in order to breed them you have to set the male and female in tanks next to each other for a bit of courting and when one or the other changes a bit of color they are ready for breeding. Sounds like a lot of work to me I saw an aquarium toilet on a website while browsing and thought it was too pretty to poop in lol.

as sometimes happens, a kid with a pleasing personality gets a relative into trouble. Like I said, it was the kids' fault for asking for a fish. She deserved it tho, as I am stingy with pets for her. On the other hand, it is the other gandmother that gets her horses, goats, dogs, cats, you name it. She is some younger but still at her age, I was not up to the work.

Well who am I kidding, LOL we DO have the horse that kicks other horses at our farm place but cats and dogs, no way. Might also get the goats as hubby thinks it is a eating wonder at keeping down the brush. I said after mind you all the beautiful surprise lilies bulbs get dig up etc. They had to have one goat put down, they paid but it was hubby who had to take it to vet. Why, well seems the goat ate a big part of a big blue plastic cover!!!! Proving to me, yep, goats will eat most anything.

My mom said that when she made her forays down to Mississippi that along the some of the local highways they had goats eating the flora to keep the growth down. I though 'what a great idea'. Though with how big my yard is I would prolly need more than one goat lol.

I've done some research about goats. not as easy to care for as one might think. since gas is over $4.gal here and my housemate has FIELDS he mows, I'm back to nagging about goats. they eat blackberries which is a big reason people hire herds of them to clear underbrush around here. the owner's of these businesses have movable fences for their herds & someone there to keep an eye on them. only takes a few hours to clear alot of space.

they are too cute! neighbor's have a pair. years ago they had one that came over to visit but I never got close to it.

that's interesting about how the Betta's mate.

we have a strange cat that's eating cat food here @ night. my little doggie went ballistic the other day when this cat tried to come inside during the day. sooooooo, now back to putting a litter box in the house so the cat window can be closed @ night. I hate this idea cause I'm the one that has to keep it clean & catch my dog before she helps herself to the poop!

                        pets keep life interesting eh?

hubby spent about $20 for a book on goats. I knew they smelt bad at times and after reading just some of that book, I know why. eerks it has to do with their mating urges I suspect and they urniate on themselves best I could tell and as easy as I know how to say it.

I also know that grands other grandparents took two grown ones back to the sale. And LOL the next time they went to same said sale, those same two goats were back to be sold. Best I can tell is yes, they do keep growth down that is reason hubby started wanting goats but I also am suspecting that there is a lot to be taken into account before just getting goats and hoping it will work out. Like I said, very expensive vet bill from just one goat eating something a person would never dream of an animal eating!

I know they have their good qualities most likely, I am just not sure I really need any of the good or bad at this time myself. I am at a point I don't feel like being responsible for much more of anything, n other words. Might be just the perfec animal for someone else, I am just pretty sure it's not for me.

eek I'd have panicked if I had seen that poor miserable goat with its great big stomach and near death after it ate that big plastic covering over their shelter.

And just in case I have not told yet, my blue betta did eat and I saw it. Yeah, so it must be getting use to my shadow or else it was extremly hungry. Just good to know it does eat.

For my records. I purchased the red & blue male betta on May 7, 2012. I have not put him in the tank yet because hubby has not made the divider. The blue male is so aggressive that he kept flaring at the new one even tho he was in his container that he was purchased in. I was floating it in the heated water to help him stay warm.

If his fins were as long and jagged as the blue one he would be so awesome. But his colors are bt far the best so each is special in their own way. The red one is the easiest going one and also the oldest. Nothing much causes him to flare in fact.

Daughter was with me and toigether we decided on the one to buy.
