Keep on Moving Club: May 2018

Last month was a day early, which excuses this month being a day late?

MS creates some real challenges to keep on moving. It helps to inspire each other on how to find ways to move.

Did you stretch in your bed, swing your arms, roll side to side today? Or perhaps you did housework? Or exercised in a pool? Tracked your count of steps? Chased your cat around the home? Pushed the wheelchair wheels with your arms at the store? Post them here and we can support and egg each other on.

I swam 1/4 mile, 13 minutes in my backyard pool. It’s warmed up to 77.5. Fine with neoprene. Much less walking and no drive compared to public pool.

I had two big moving days last week, one right after the other. On Wednesday, I went to Spaulding Rehab Hospital to see the physiatrist. There was a lot of walking in that building and I wasted a lot of energy taking Peter down a long hall to the Cafeteria which turned out to be a huge gym because we were on the wrong floor.

The exam also was strenuous. Then, on the way home, we were in rush hour traffic clogging intersections and preventing us from making a critical turn. We ended up in a severe, pelting rain storm in the Financial District. I was in a car seat for over an hour when I needed to stretch my leg out and put ice on.

Remarkably, the next day was a museum date w a friend and I did not cancel! Lots of walking there but I did OK. :-)

Sunshine and Ann get lots of chocolate!

Today, I did my weekly exercise. I left about 2:30 and went to an eyeglass store and tried on glasses for quite awhile. Did not sit down there. Then went to another one and tried on more. I set for part of that. Then on to Harris Teeter for grocery shopping. I came by house and brought in frozen stuff and made a quick pit stop, then to K-Mart to pick up prescriptions, then to drug store for items I needed, then to Lowe's Foods for things they didn't have at Harris Teeter. I then stopped at Panera and got food for tonight and a salad for tomorrow night. I got home at 7:15 and still had to put groceries away and eat. I am a little bit tired.

Virginia, I could not do that. And I could not make a stop at the house. Once home, I wouldn't get back out.

              You did good.

Swam 12 minutes 1/4 mile, packed up the surf board for tomorrow, ... and while in pool post swim, pulled a few weeds in the tile cracks on deck at edge of pool.

Oh, swimming at home now. That should be less work.

                  Extra credit for pulling weeds.

Whew, Virginia! You're a regular whirling dervish!

My average step count for April was 1,240 steps/day--a little better than March (1,175).

The project I'm signed up for has issued me a watch that is supposed to show the steps on a dial but so far it hasn't been working. The people in charge say that they'll fix it. I hope so because it just might give me an incentive. I'll look at that dial and see my dismal performance and be inspired. The dial shows percentages, with 10,000 steps being 100%.

ANN, you've been doing some major walking there. And Sunshine, pulling weeds should definitely count.

There is surfing on live on CBS now. Started at 2PM. WSL Founders' Cup.

Watching isn't moving but I'm a fan now.

That's using a wave machine, so each wave is identical to the last one. I prefer watching the real thing.

Agate your steps were wonderful. My problem is that I do too much in one day and then I am just kind of out of it for the next 2 to 3 days. All I can do today is sit or lay around.

Ann, you say you couldn't do what I do, but remember I can only do this by getting back in the car for short burst to let my legs get a little bit rested. I wouldn't even attempt the art museum. I do miss it though. If I don't get everything done when I go out I know I am going to have to go back so I push myself. You can always ask Peter to do something if you forget it.

But since we are not competing with anyone but ourselves I think we are all doing what we can. I can see Agate getting stronger and Sunshine doing more now, and it really makes me feel good.

That is a very sweet post Virginia!

Yes, I saw that wave machine competition yesterday. It is so boring! It would be like watching a hunter practice shooting at a shooting range, rather than following him in the woods, watching him stalk prey with a bow and arrow etc.
